Data Scientist

One Acre Fund
Nairobi, Kenya or...
One Acre Fund has a robust research program spanning all countries of operation including thousands of farmers and well over a hundred agronomic and socioeconomic trials each year. The Data Scientist will be on the Agriculture Research Team, which works directly with each in-country research team (Innovations Teams) to identify new research opportunities and provide technical support where needed. The Data Scientist will be responsible for the following: Adapting agronomic elements of the program to heterogeneous conditions – The Data Scientist will be responsible for working with internal and external agricultural scientists to analyze field crop yield gap drivers and develop agronomic hypotheses to be tested through on-farm trials. This will involve aggregation of weather, soil, pest and disease, and agronomic data to analyze the magnitude of various sources of yield variation in different areas of program operation. It will also involve coordinating with field teams to collect the data we need and setting and executing analysis plans. - External collaborations and relationship management – We will be working with external partners to develop scalable, data-driven development tools for not only One Acre Fund clients but smallholders outside of our program as well. This may include development of a plant disease visual diagnosis app and using remote sensing to predict maize yields. It may also include working with our in-house MIR spectroscopy lab to improve soil chemical parameter prediction models and directly predict yields from soil spectra. The Data Scientist will be responsible for managing much of the external-facing work related to these initiatives including interfacing with donors and researchers. - Capacity building and advising – We are looking for someone with experience and willingness to teach others and advise on organizational data and analytical decisions. A successful Data Scientist at One Acre Fund will enable and improve the analyses of other analysts both within the Agricultural Research Team and in other departments. This role will serve as a teacher of teachers by building the skills of other analysts who provide analytical support within the organization. Training topics may include questionnaire design and execution, efficient data cleaning, outlier management, model selection and interpretation, and predictive analyses. The Data Scientist will also be responsible for advising on organizational decisions about data systems management. - Exploration – The Agricultural Research Team is an inherently exploratory team; we are tasked with identifying new impact opportunities for in-country research teams (Innovation Teams) to assess and scale. We anticipate that the Data Scientist will take on exploratory analyses, propose new global research programs, change the way that we approach existing analyses, and identify new avenues by which One Acre Fund can deliver data-driven impact to smallholder farmers.

ProPublica Is Hiring a Data Machinist/ETL Expert ...

ProPublica
New York City
ProPublica is seeking a data expert and programmer to implement an Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) workflow that will help us maintain some of our most important online databases and to build an infrastructure to make maintaining our work easier forever. ProPublica leads the industry in the number and complexity of data sets that we maintain continuously and make available to the public through our interactive graphics and news applications online. The person in this position can help revolutionize how we — and the entire news industry — use ETL in our data workflows. For instance: We’ve maintained our Dollars for Docs database since 2010. Though it’s gotten easier over the years, it’s still a huge job. In addition to that, we have about 20 data sets that we’re committed to keeping up to date. Some are quick and easily scripted. Some are more involved and require manual fiddling. We need help making our processes consistent and predictable. That’s where you come in. As our data machinist you will build us better tools for doing this work. This includes: - Researching and gaining a thorough understanding of our existing data sets and news apps. - Creating ETL workflows and helping us adopt ETL tools and infrastructure to support updating and maintaining those apps. - Updating existing data sets using the new tools. - Sharing skills and know-how with the News Apps team, and perhaps writing about the work in public posts on our blog. There are two kinds of ability needed for this work: - Using “editorial judgment” to clean dirty data in a consistent, defensible, documented, and repeatable way. That could mean canonicalizing inconsistent fields, joining data sets, etc. - Creating automated data workflows and building tools to support them. Some of that will require custom code (Python or Ruby preferred), though it will also require adopting and training the rest of the team in an ETL system like Talend Open Studio or Pentaho Kettle. The ideal candidate is an ETL expert who’s a news junkie. News experience not a requirement, but excellent communication skills and a desire to share skills are critical. We also know that great candidates can bring skills to ProPublica that we haven’t thought of, and who won’t fit everything we’ve described above. If this is you, don’t hesitate to apply, and tell us what unique contributions you can offer. This is a contract position that runs through the end of 2017. ProPublica’s offices are in New York City but we’re open to having you work remote. This position is full time and includes benefits. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The last day to apply is Sunday, May 7. ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. Therefore, we are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

Data Editor

ProPublica
New York City
ProPublica is looking for a data editor with the vision and skills to guide, edit and elevate top-notch, data-based projects that spur change. As data editor you will: - Lead a growing team of data reporters working across the newsroom. - Help edit the institution’s most complex data stories and play a leading role in editing our complex methodology white papers, ensuring that the language as well as the statistical work is accurate and well-explained. - Maintain standards and best practices for data projects. - Create effective workflows that ensure that projects are completed on schedule. - Execute a vision to keep pushing ProPublica’s data journalism forward and help us set the standard for the industry. Our ideal candidate will have: - Training in statistics and experience applying complex statistical concepts in a newsroom. This means choosing models that are suitable to answering statistical questions as well as being able to explain them to readers. - A strong belief that transparency and open sourcing is an important part of responsible data science. For this reason, you’ll also need to have proficiency in R, or in using Python for data analysis. - We also know that great candidates can bring skills to ProPublica that we haven’t thought of, and who won’t fit everything we’ve described above. If this is you, don’t hesitate to apply, and tell us what unique contributions you can offer. Candidates elsewhere must be willing to relocate to New York City. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The last day to apply is Sunday, May 7. This position is a permanent role and is full time with benefits. ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. Therefore, we are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

Data Science Adviser

ProPublica
N/A
ProPublica is seeking an experienced statistician or data scientist to advise us on our complex data-journalism projects. Our data science adviser will serve a role similar to that of a dissertation adviser. On our largest projects they will help us develop plans, get us through snags or problems that arise as we are working, and help us draw sound conclusions. On smaller projects, they could be a pair of eyes that makes sure we haven’t overlooked something. We estimate the time commitment will be about 35 hours per quarter for the remainder of 2017, though the nature of journalism is such that there are likely to be short periods of concentrated work, so time flexibility is crucial. Because our work is so varied — we’ll be using biostatistics for one project, economics for another — it’s impossible to find one person with all the skills necessary. The person in this position should have a large personal network and be able to help us find other experts willing to help. He or she will also help make sure that the work of the experts is being done properly and that we’re communicating well together. This person would be available to help us respond when our work is questioned by research communities, such as making sure we’re prioritizing our responses properly and that our arguments are sound. They would also work with ProPublica’s editors to create standards for our data projects for things such as attribution, data integrity and bulletproofing. This a paid contract position. Our office is in New York but our adviser can work from anywhere. A PhD or equivalent degree in a quantitative field is required. Our ideal candidate would not need to have journalism training, but they should be mentally flexible enough to understand that we need to be accessible to readers, and therefore some techniques might be more appropriate than others. They should also understand that the story is the end goal and the math is just the means to a greater end.
