Data Science Manager

DataKind
New York City, NY
Named as one of Fast Company's 10 most innovative nonprofits in their 2017 Wold's Most Innovative Companies List, we are a global organization that aims to harness the power of data science in the service of humanity. We bring pro bono data scientists together with organizations that are dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing challenges. Every day, mission driven organizations apply to us with their data science needs. We then work to understand their pain points, how their organization works and, most importantly, how their data and other data sources can be used to make the biggest impact on the world. We’ve helped the World Bank estimate poverty from satellite imagery, teamed with the Grameen Foundation to improve their mobile knowledge programs in Uganda, and joined the Red Cross in using fire data and open city data to understand where fires are most likely to occur. We’ve gained a prominent voice in both the data sector and the social entrepreneurship world and you can find word of us in The Guardian, The Economist, Mashable, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review. See this TEDx video for more about what we do. Our Data Science Manager will be located in our New York City offices, working closely with the Director of Impact and Engagements to enhance existing programs, design processes, create strategies, and build internal and external data science teams. In this highly visible and high impact role, you’ll oversee our existing DataCorps projects and design them for maximal impact. You will be instrumental in exploring new ways for data science to make an impact on the social sector, devise clever ways to use our community of volunteer data scientists for the greater good, and bring a visionary approach to the new ways huge datasets, new technologies, and novel partnerships can improve the world. ###Who You Are: **A creative data professional**: You’ve mastered the art of turning a vague business challenge into a crisp data science problem, helping organizations realize their social missions in new, high impact ways. You are able to draw from your years of professional experience both as an analyst and project manager. You know what data science teams need to be successful and you’re ready to lead them there. **An esteemed manager**: Your career began working in the trenches as a coder, software developer, consultant, or business analyst. These days however, you’re most comfortable providing direction and mentorship to your team, resolving conflicts quickly while keeping everyone happily engaged. Some weeks, you won’t touch any code, and that’s totally fine by you. **A closer**: You have a proven track record of successfully managing full life-cycle projects, prototyping and launching data-driven products. You know how to build and maintain a healthy pipeline of projects and enjoy framing analytics problems creatively to meet the needs of both DataKind and our partners. **A technical hybrid**: You understand the language of nonprofits and can translate it into technical requirements and vice versa. **An impact-driven professional**: You are committed to building a career and leveraging your expertise in a space that marries the rigor of the private sector, the responsibility of the public sector, and the passion of the nonprofit sector. ###What You’ll Do: * Manage volunteer projects in DataKind’s flagship program, the DataCorps * Lead day-to-day team project operations and activities and ensure work is progressing as planned * Write and oversee project briefs for DataCorps project portfolio and manage scope creep * Scope projects with the Programs Team, contribute to scope statements and develope project plans * Vet, train, and staff volunteers on project teams * Plan and execute project kick-off meetings and oversee project partner and volunteer team check-ins and end of phase presentations * Consistently communicate and manage expectations of partner organizations and volunteers throughout the entire project life cycle * Work closely with the Director of Impact and Engagement on developing and continuously improving our process and our product * Frequently solicit feedback from partner organizations and volunteers to execute action plans based on their feedback ###Requirements: * **Technically savvy.** You’re someone who knows their way around the “data stack” - R, Python, MySQL and their brethren. You can get the data you need wherever it lives, organize it, and explore it. * **Formidable Data Scientist.** Not only can you argue when to use a decision tree over an SVM, you’ve probably written a few custom algorithms yourself. * **Project Manager extraordinaire.** You’re a project manager and you’ve been one for years. You have a proven track record of successfully managing full life-cycle tech projects and love nothing more than successfully getting a project to the finish line. Managing tech teams, creating Gantt charts, managing scope creep, using Agile, creating project planning templates and monitoring key results are all familiar tools in your arsenal. * **Extremely organized.** Whether or not you are a type A in your personal life, you certainly are in your work life. You don’t let any details get lost and are so "on it," you make the container store look disorganized. You know what it’s like to volunteer. You’ve had dozens of volunteer experiences and understand what it's like to give up your free time for something you love. Even better if you have experience managing volunteers. * **Highly adaptable.** You can work any project, with any team. Not because you know everything, but because teamwork is your middle name and you always ensure your team succeeds. Committed to continuous learning. It's not enough to just get a project done, you want to make sure the process gets even better for next time. You're excited to capture and share learnings to refine and improve our process and make sure our volunteers and project partners have a great experience with us. * **Articulate.** You have experience presenting your results to leaders and interested in stakeholders. You are able to message your work effectively depending upon the audience. You have a strong mastery of grammar and detest passive voice. English language skills are essential. ###Bonus qualifications: * Nonprofit / NGO and volunteer management experience * 4-6 years work experience on data science projects as a data scientist, analyst, modeler, engineer or similar * 2+ years experience managing data science, business analytics, big data, artificial intelligence, or data engineering project * Advanced degree or requisite experience in management and business administration, consulting, process improvement, or other business practitioner are * Advanced degree or requisite experience in applied statistics, mathematics, computer science, or other quantitative area ###Your working environment: * A company culture that sets high standards, values new ideas and innovative approaches, and supports employee growth * An open and casual work space where colleagues challenge you to learn and grow, are open to collaboration, and expect you bring a sense of humor with your ‘A’ game * A comprehensive and growing benefits package ###Equal Opportunity Employment Naturally, we’re an equal opportunity employer, and strongly encourage qualified diverse candidates to apply.
